The Town of Okotoks and volunteers got together to honour our seniors today.

Residents from local seniors residences, and those living in town were treated to lunch and live entertainment at the Okotoks Recreation Centre at the annual Senior's Tea and Luncheon for Seniors' Week.

President of the Okotoks Seniors Club Elida Raynor says Seniors' Week is a chance to recognize the work our seniors have done and continue to do.

"They're volunteering all over the place, they're doing tutoring, the dog tails things, they help out the foodbank, they're on committees and boards, they really are very involved all over the community," she says. "Other than that they really help each other out, there's a lot of support between seniors, driving people to medical appointments, making sure they're okay after surgery, all that kind of stuff."

She says seniors are very active in the community, and make up a large part of our population, which could be seen with the large attendance at the luncheon.

"Okotoks is known for being a young, vibrant community full of young families and children, but you know what I think there's seniors on every corner, we're all over the place, and this proves it look at the numbers."

Raynor shares even if an individual doesn't have time to volunteer at a senior's residence, there are many small things everyone can do to support the elderly.

"I just think being very aware of some of the challenges, like being aware seniors are going to take a longer time to cross the road on foot, and to pay attention to that while driving would be a small example. Sometimes when you go somewhere making sure the food is appropriate for them, there are a lot of little things that go a long way."

Seniors Week in Alberta runs until Sunday, June 11.
