The Town of Okotoks will be exploring the implementation of public transit to provide additional options for the growth and diversity in the community.

The town will partner will Stantec Consulting Ltd. on two studies that will assist in the implementation of the project.

The Local Transit Implementation Plan will be divided into two phases of studies; first to gather resident input, then to showcase a drafted plan based on the feedback received.

Senior Planner for the town, Colin Gainer, says a number of different factors have contributed to the need to explore the option further.

"We've heard through broad based consultation about the need and desire for local transit. We are a growing community and need to provide for a measure of sustainability and address the growing traffic demands on the municipality," said Gainer.

Gainer also says the studies will assist with finding the best option for the community in terms of transit development, keeping in mind the challenges, demands, and environmental sustainability principals of the town.

"We're really right- sizing local transit for the community that's going to work and is going to make the most sense as we go forward." he said.

Transit service delivery is expected for 2019. More information on the project can be accessed at okotoks.ca/localtransit.

The project team will be sharing information and gathering input at the Okotoks Dawgs game on June 6th, as well as the Okotoks Rec Centre foyer on June 7th from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
