Thousands of people have been displaced after Tuesday's wildfire spread right into the city of Fort McMurray leaving a giant path of destruction to thousands of homes and still has the potential to create more damage Wednesday.

One former High River and Okotoks resident Erica Moeskau is working up in the fire ravaged city for Country 93.3 & Rock 97.7 radio and says it's been a long, frightful few hours since the fire jumped the Athabasca River.

She says when she started the day the fire looked to be under control but that quickly changed around 1 p.m.

"My roommate came storming into my room saying 'Why aren't you answering your phone? We're in voluntary evacuation'. So we had about 20 minutes and we just got out the front door when they switched our neighbourhood into a mandatory evacuation."

Moeskau lives in the Wood Buffalo community and as of Wednesday morning reports show that 1600 structures have burned down and she says she believes she won't have anything to go back to when it's safe to return to Fort McMurray.

"I was kind of hopeful that our place would still be standing but then after seeing a picture one of my girlfriends posted on Facebook of her house in flames, her house was a few blocks further from the fire than ours so I'm assuming my place is gone too."

For Moeskau all she can do right now is wait and see when she can get home to her family in Okotoks, as she's currently north of the city at the Beaver Lodge work camp safe and sound but like anyone else in that area right now, she says she would like to be home with her family.

"Emergency services is recommending that if you're in a camp and you're safe to stay put. That's easier said than done though when you're having horrible anxiety about 'I just really want to be back home, I want to get back to Okotoks and get out of this and get to my parents and I really don't know what to do."

Reports from officials Fort McMurray have indicated that 88,000 people were evacuated from Fort McMurray and so far no fatalities or severe injuries have been reported.
