The Market Square Spring Fling was in full swing Saturday, especially when you walked in the door at the Centennial Centre and saw the Jail.

Local leaders, like town Councillor Matt Rockley and Calgary Stampeders player Charlie Powers, could be seen locked up in the "Jail" that the Okotoks Food Bank had set up.

Executive Director for the food bank, Sheila Hughes, says that the event is a unique and fun way to raise money for the food bank.

"These leaders of the community agreed to go to jail, and raise funds for the food bank to get out of jail."

How did these "detainees" get out of jail? They were allowed to have cell phones and computers in the jail with them, and had to go through their contacts to get friends, family, business partners or co-workers to donate to the cause.

"They send them emails, tweets and post Facebook messages from jail and ask them to post bail for them."

The donations will help the food bank through the summer, when the donations are seen to decrease but the need stays the same, or as Hughes expects, increases.

"The money raised will help us to continue to buy the food that we need," Hughes says.
