Westmount residents will see new additions to neighbourhood streets on the drive home yesterday, June 9.

Fifth grade students at Westmount school paired up with the Conservation Educators this afternoon for the yellow fish project to remind Okotokians to keep our river clean.

Alysia Kirby, Conservation Educator with the town, says the students used stencils and bright yellow paint to relay their message.

"We're going around painting all the storm drains with yellow fish and the message 'rain water only', and teaching the grade fives that anything that goes down the storm drain goes into the river. We're just putting awareness out there for students and the public as well."

She says the yellow fish project pairs well with the student's curriculum, and has taught them a lot about the importance of maintaining clean water systems.

"They've learned a lot about wetlands and animals that live in the river, fish, and birds among others. They've learnt that we need to make sure we keep our water clean, because that's also what we drink, so they can protect our species and keep our drinking water clean."

Kirby shares this is the second year the Conservation Educators have done the yellow fish project, last year they painted near the Okotoks Recreation Centre.
