There's a great opportunity to check out the work of local artists at the Leighton Art Centre.

The 15th Annual Juried Members' Show opened last month and runs until June 16.

Leighton Art Centre Executive Director Chelsey Kehler says artist members were invited to submit up to three pieces to be considered for entry to the show.

"This year we had over 300 submissions and we chose 68 artists," Kehler says. "Some of them have one piece, some of them have two pieces, so the house is chock-a-block full of some of the best art we've ever seen from our artist members this year."

She says submissions are chosen by an anonymous jury of professional artists and it's always interesting to discover their selections for the exhibit. Once again this year, there will be a variety of media featured in the show.

"We have everything this year from acrylic, there's watercolour, we've got stone sculptures," Kehler says. "One gentleman who's new to us has stone mosaics and twig mosaics which are absolutely fabulous. You really have to see them to understand because words don't do them justice. So it's everything from rocks and dirt, all the way up to oil."

The membership of the Leighton Art Centre is made up primarily of artists from throughout the Foothills and Calgary.
