The Okotoks Legion will be upgrading their facilities in the Elks Hall thanks to Wednesday's Canada 150 Fund announcement.

The legion will receive $2,290 towards the renovations.

Legion President Bob Macleod says the remodeling is the least they can do for the Elks Hall who have helped them get back on their feet.

"We have a room identified by them to be a legion room," he says. "We need money, we need assistance to sort of convert it to something, that is really shows the tradition and shows our purposes, the grant from Canada 150 comes just at the perfect time."

Macleod says when the meeting room is complete, it will be able to host more meetings in it.

"It's still being used for a number of things," he says. "But in fact, it needs improved lighting, it needs painting, the ceiling needs repair and the walls needs re-doing, we need to improve the electric and we need to improve the lighting."

He says the legion was able to easily match what the government was willing to dish out thanks to some great volunteering and club management.

"With our general fund with our fundraising activities, with having dinners and other activities that we've had, and some very nice donations from the members of the branch, we have enough money in our general fund, the general membership agreed in applying for a grant on their behalf from Canada 150."

The legion has grown quite a bit since it's reinstatement last year, now over 180 members call the Okotoks legion their home club.

Macleod says the club can always use new members and you don't need to be a veteran or the descendant of a veteran.
