The Foothills School board is short one trustee after Jennifer Kristiansen handed in her resignation at last week's meeting.

Assistant Superintendent Drew Chipman says Kristiansen, who represented the High River ward is moving to Okotoks.

"The Education Act and the Local Authorities Election Act says you have to be able to be nominated, you have to be qualified to be a nominee for the position and because we are using the ward system, she won't live in the ward anymore so she won't be able to represent and serve on the board," he says.

Chipman says the remaining trustees will discuss whether to hold a byelection with just one year left to serve on their term.

He says COVID-19 means there's one more consideration to take in before deciding to hold a byelection.

Superintendent Chris Fuzessy says the board expressed its gratitude for the work trustee Kristiansen has done over her term and the executive team also thanked her for the commitment and passion she brought to the board.

Kristiansen's resignation become official September 15.
