Registration for any sport is expensive and a new endeavour by KidSport Okotoks is hoping to help alleviate the pressures that come with pooling money aside for families to register their kids in sports.

Starting next week, Kidsport along with the Okotoks Sobeys will begin the 'Local Businesses Helping Local Families' campaign.

Shari Gustafson, chair of KidSport Okotoks, says it's a great way to help people stay active.

"Sobeys will be accepting donations at the tills from February 12 to March 2 to help KidSport raise funds for families in our community who may need financial assistance with sport registration fees," she says.

Kidsport helped keep 228 different kids in the game with their efforts which allows families to receive up to $600 in support for all things related to sport.

"Our numbers have skyrocketed with the number of families that we've been able to assist with in the last few years," Gustafson says. "So we are in need of a fundraiser where we can bring in a larger amount of dollars to help support the funds needed by families in our community."

Gustafson says $600 may seem like a hefty number... it really just scratches the surface when it comes to signing up for any local sports.

"That might sound like a large amount but when you look at sports these days an average registration fee for a season of sport is anywhere between $400 and $1000."

The Eagle 100.9 will also be getting involved with 'Local Businesses Helping Local Families' by broadcasting live from Sobeys on March 6 to help bring in more donations as well.

Gustafson adds that without the great support from the community they wouldn't have been able to help 228 kids play the sports they love and cherish.

"Without our community rallying behind us we wouldn't be able to do the work we do."
