The Town of Okotoks is taking the proper steps to make sure children are safe at summer events.

Parents are being encouraged to snap a photo on their cell phones of their children when they get to an event so they have a current and accurate description of them on hand incase they get separated.

Janette Messer, community programs and events manager, says the town is ready to help residents in an emergency at all events.

"At all of the events this year we do have the command centre set up which is for incidences and it's also the location for missing or lost children and adults so we do have procedures in place and all of our staff are trained to assist where necessary."

Messer recommends parents are proactive and go over procedures with their children ahead of time incase they do get lost.

"The challenge is you always go back to where you last saw them and if your child is wandering they're not going to be there so we just ask parents they suggest to their children 'don't wander, stay where you are, and we'll come and find you'."
