This cold weather isn't fit for man or beast.

Kim Hessel with the Heaven Can Wait Animal Shelter says all things in moderation.

"I think it's still safe to walk your dog obviously in the colder weather but you need be aware of things like staying out longer than what he or she is able to do," Hessel says. "So you do have to watch for frostbite and that's very common on dogs feet and dogs ears, cats as well, so take your dog for a walk, just bundle them up properly and maybe don't go as long as you normally do."

Hessel says animals have a good grasp of the cold and will come inside when they need to, so don't forget they're outside.

She also urges pet owners not to be complacent just because they're dog has a thick coat.

"I mean even if you have a breed that has a good thick coat on them, they can still get chilled, they can still be cold right down throughout that fur and their body fat is a factor in how warm they stay," she says.

She says contrary to the belief of some dogs and cats don't get much water from snow so they need to come inside to get hydrated.
