Saying they were committed to a "Bad Deal" the ruling Alberta NDP government will pony up the money to fix the flood damaged Kananaskis Country Golf Course.

Environment Minister Shannon Phillips says in the end the cost to restore the course, is cheaper than the penalties the Province would have to pay to the operator if they don't.

"Proceeding with the rebuild will cost government, excluding the settlement cost and factoring the Federal reimbursement, between $3.8 and $8.8 million. The difference of $5-million is for additional mitigation work that may or may not be covered through the Federal Disaster Relief Program. That investment is offset by approximately $1.3-million dollars in revenue coming to the Crown annually through the life of this agreement."

A portion of those profits will go to restore the William Watson Lodge for Albertans' with disabilities to be able to enjoy K-Country at a reduced cost.

The golf course, which will reopen in the summer of 2017, is consistently ranked among the top 100 in the world and employs 150 people.

The deal between the Province and Kan-Alta, who operate the course expires in 2016 at which point Phillips says the Province will proceed to a public tender process for the long term management of the facility.
