As the end of the month draws near, Okotoks businesses are being reminded their business license fees are due.

Business licenses ensure they've met all the requirements to run a business in Okotoks including development, fire, safety, and Alberta health requirements.

Alexandra Ross, Economic Development Specialist with the Town of Okotoks, says while it is a bylaw for businesses to comply with all municipal requirements, the licenses also act as a form of protection for the owners and customers.

"It's an advantage because furthermore, in case of an insurance claim, it ensures that the business owner put everything in place to operate in a safe place and do not put customers, themselves, or their property at risk. In terms of the residents, it's a tool to ensure that the business they're contracting or purchasing goods from is legitimate."

Ross says there's been issues where companies have been soliciting door-to-door and residents have contacted the Town saying they had a problem with the company, but the Town was unable to act because the company in question did not have a business license.

Anyone who conducts a business of any form in Okotoks, including home based, store fronts, offices, contractors, and all companies outside of Okotoks, require a business license. This also includes events like markets and trade shows.

Professional services like medical clinics and lawyers don't pay business license fees, they pay a business tax. Not-for profits do not have to pay a business license fee or business tax but still need a license.

Ross says the fees go towards a variety of areas that benefit the business community.

"The money for the licenses is utilized for the administration and vetting of the licenses and permits in addition to a variety of initiatives," she explains. "Initiatives include marketing materials to attract investment and businesses as well as visitors into town."

She adds when visitors are brought in it in-turn attracts business and investment.

Licenses range from $140- $480 depending on the type of business, number of employees, and location.

Fees can be paid online through the Town's Virtual Town Hall.
