The weather is surprisingly warm for this time of year and it leaves people wondering if it's the right time for their spring yard clean up.

Usually in Southern Alberta we experience a late and harsh period of winter but this year it's safe to start tending to your yard.

Co-owner of Kayben Farms, Judy Kolk says one of the many things you can start doing is dethatch your grass.

"This is a great time to dethatch your grass and that's really a very firm raking to get rid of dead grass. If your mower isn't picking up all your dead grass or cutting it very effectively, dethatch it, it will grow better if you get rid of that."

Kolk says another method you can begin is dividing and moving perennials, "dividing and moving perennials can be done at this time of year. Any perennials that are blooming I wouldn't move until they are finished but anything that hasn't bloomed yet this is a good time because they haven't started doing a lot of active growing yet. And you do want to water them in really well after you move them so they can get reestablished."

Other appropriate steps at this time would be pruning shrubs and trees as well as controlling all weeds before they run away from you.

One thing Kolk suggests waiting for is fertilizing grass, due to the lack of moisture the area has received fertilizing could burn your grass.
