Some residents of the Town of Okotoks may have seen an increase in their water bill and the Town has some ways to help sort out possible confusion or discrepancies.

Town Corporate & Strategic Services Director Nancy Weigel says the first place to start is looking at your bill.

"On the bill itself it provides a number to our Town Utility Clerk and we suggest that they start by giving that individual a call," she says. "They can have a look at their bill's history and the usage and they'll ask a series of question as to some possible reasons behind the high water usage."

The clerk's number is 403-938-8937 and Weigel says if you haven't been watering your yard or garden because of the rainy summer the Town experienced there might be a few other reasons why the bill has gone up.

"One of the most common reasons tends to be a leaky toilet, some of the other ones that at this time of year there might have been some additional significant watering. An irrigation system leak would be another example, a humidifier leak those types of things."

Weigel says with the new water conservation and leak detection program advanced metering features coming in that it will be easier for residents to justify their bills is something seems out of place when it comes to payment.

"That is the ability to actually see much more clearly from the residents perspective as well whether there are leaks or not and there's water usage when something is actually not turned on."

The new program is set to finish by the spring.
