The Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation has released some surprising stats.

Seventy-five per cent of Albertans knew to call 9-1-1 for a person experiencing a stroke, but 39 per cent couldn't name the signs of a stroke.

Donna Hastings, CEO of the Foundation, says during stroke month they want to raise awareness of the signs and provide tips on prevention.

"Through our stroke month campaign in June our volunteers are sharing vital health information about the signs of stroke and how to manage risk factors," Hastings says. "The one piece we ask people to learn and remember is FAST, so "F" stands for face, is it drooping, "A" for arms, can you lift both, "S" for speech, is it slurred or jumbled and "T" for time, to call 9-1-1 right away."

She says the faster someone gets to a treatment facility the better their chance of a good outcome.

Hastings says it is surprising that 39 per cent don't know what to look for considering one in three Albertans will, in their lifetime, will develop stroke, dementia or both.

One of the better methods of prevention is dealing with high blood pressure.
