Some Holy Trinity Academy students will be choosing an alternative way to celebrate their graduation this year.

Carmen Ostafichuk, HTA principal, says Supergrad was developed 11 years ago by a former teacher who wanted to provide an alternative graduation party option for his daughter.

"His idea has developed into a tradition where our staff supervise an all-night, substance-free grad party on the evening of prom," Ostafichuk explains.

Students meet at HTA at midnight and are then bused to Shakers Fun Centre in Calgary. Graduates and supervising teachers participate in the activities offered at Shakers throughout the night. They're then returned to HTA at about 6 that morning.

"The benefits are that our students have the opportunity to spend some final time with staff and they have the option of a substance-free celebration for their graduation," Ostafichuk explains.
