The Okotoks Fire Department is offering free home inspections to ensure residences in town maintain the highest standards of safety.

The fire department will come to any residence and look at injury prevention, and find any situations that could be potential hazards within a home.

Okotoks Fire Chief Ken Thevenot says there are a number of things they will examine in the home.

"So we'll look at things like escape planning, if you have two ways out of the building, do you have a meeting place outside and do you practice this often? We just want to ensure families do have a plan in place. When we get into the homes we also look at smoke detectors and make sure they're working."

Thevenot shares the department will also cover many safety precautions people may not have thought of.

"The next thing would be any electrical type hazards for example extension cords, to see if they're used in proper ways. Then just general house keeping, for example keeping the basement storage rooms and furnace rooms in an orderly fashion. We also check for flammable liquids or solvents that may be in the garage for fuel safety."

Thevenot adds fire extinguisher lessons, furnace and heating safety should also be covered, he says the fire department had lots of knowledge for solutions to any problems that arise.
