Rain didn't dampen the spirits of firefighters in Bragg Creek last week at the Heroes in the Sky event.

Despite being cut a day short due to the weather, the event still raised $6,000 and was the first time in seven years a day of the event had to be cancelled.

Gary Robertson, vice-president of the Redwood Meadows Firefighters' Association, says the money plays a huge role in supporting health and wellness programs for their volunteer firefighters.

"We brought in a nutritionist to do one-on-one consults with the firefighters," he says. "We also offered each firefighter a $100 spending credit so they could go and buy a pair of running shoes or they could get a yoga membership, a gym membership, a ski pass, basically anything to promote health and wellness. We also organized some sports activity nights throughout the winter."

Robertson says rain or shine, the firefighters held up well on the roof.

"Saturday they got really, really hot weather so they enjoyed that. Sunday they woke up to a bit of a puddle in their tent, but we brought them down a little bit early because the event was cancelled but they survived, they did alright."

Robertson says the Redwood Meadows Firefighters' Association is already looking ahead to next year's event.
