The last long weekend of the summer is officially here and that means plenty of cars and RV's will be on Alberta's roads getting that one last taste of summer.

The Labour Day long weekend also signals an increased chance of motor vehicle collision and presence of law enforcement.

Okotoks RCMP Sgt. Sukh Randhawa says taking extra precaution on the road this weekend is vital for a safe departure and return home.

"The RCMP will be out and about during this long weekend in the Town of Okotoks as well as the highways," he says. "we're gently reminding the public to conscious of the fact that they need to obey the rules of the road, be safe, give yourself enough time to drive and drive safely to wherever you're going."

School is out early on Friday's with most students getting out by 2 p.m. which might be the same time for those looking to get a head start on the weekend but Randhawa says with school just getting back into the swing of things it's important to slow down.

"There's going to be a lot of school buses and kids in the school zone areas. Slow down while driving through them give yourself even time again if you're going from point a to b, don't rush, don't text and drive and be aware of your surroundings."

Randhawa says on the way to and from your destination it's important to step up defensive driving techniques with crowded highways.

"Always wear your seat belt, follow the speed limits and drive accordingly to the road conditions, plan ahead, allow for extra time for delays that may occur. Use extra caution, keep on the look out for others on the road and please don't drink and drive."
