The Town of Okotoks is continuing its pursuit of becoming a greener community.

Through a partnership with Sun Country Highway, downtown Okotoks is receiving two new electric car chargers, a Tesla and EV60 electric chargers, which are slated to be installed along Elizabeth Street.

The Tesla is a quick charger for Tesla vehicles while the EV60 is a universal adapter for any type of electric vehicle.

Dawn Smith, Sustainability Coordinator with the Town of Okotoks, says they'll help to attract tourism downtown.

"They're to promote that people are adopting the use of electric vehicles, and also from an economic development perspective that communities are installing electric vehicle stations in their downtown so that people will come and charge their vehicles and while they're waiting for their vehicles to charge they can shop and have lunch, coffee, and experience the community."

The electric car chargers on Elizabeth Street will look similar to this one located at Westmount School.

Smith says the chargers align with the Town's philosophy on being a leader in environmental stewardship.

"The great news is that the Town does procure 100 percent renewable energy through the renewable energy credits which means that all the green house gases from the electricity of charging these vehicles will be offset so they'll be net zero which is a fantastic contribution as well."

The chargers come at no cost to the Town, they just have to pay the installation fees which Smith says will be around $3,000- $5,000.

Residents will be able to use the chargers for free. They're expected to be installed around the middle of August.
