Christmas is the season of giving and that includes giving the gift of life by donating blood.

Canadian Blood Services sees a decline in the amount of blood donations this time of year due to people occupied with the holidays and having busy schedules.

Lisa Castro, Territory Services Manager for Canadian Blood Services, says all blood types are needed however O negative is especially needed as it's compatible with all types.

"Right now we have just over a three day suppy of O negative blood but we need to be somewhere between a five and eight day supply for our blood and our blood products to meet anticipated hospital demand."

Castro says donors should come in prepared for their appointments.

"Drink lots of fluids, be well fed and well rested... women can donate every 84 days and men can donate every 56 days."

New this year blood donor clinics are being hosted at Canadian Blood Services Eau Claire location and at Winsport on New Years Day as well as on Christmas Eve at the Calgary Jewish Community Centre.

Those looking to donate closer to home can check out clinics happening in High River on Dec. 16 at the High River Baptist Church from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. and Dec. 18 at the Heritage Inn from 4- 8 p.m. A clinic is scheduled for Okotoks in the New Year at the Foothills Centennial Centre on Jan. 23 from 4- 8 p.m.
