Being able to play sports can sometimes be the best present a kid could get at Christmas time.

Kidsport Okotoks has launched their Give The Gift Of Sport campaign for the holiday season.

The organization helps keep kids off the sidelines and in the game with helping those who may not be able to afford registration fees and equipment.

Kidsport Okotoks Chair Shari Gustafson says a simple online donation can help make an athlete's aspirations come to life.

"Gift that to someone special," she says. "you can make a donation on their behalf, you can make a donation in honour of someone it's an awesome way to capture  the true spirit of the season and to support your community."

Gustafson says donations at Christmas help families fight the holiday stress and finances that come with it.

"Not only is September is a registration season, but a lot of times new sports start up in January and Christmas season is difficult so to get a child registered in a program after Christmas is sometimes hard for families, it removes the financial barriers and stress."

Gustafson says Kidsport Okotoks has helped many kids play sports already this year.

"We are well over 150 kids at this point in time in the year," she says. "Our numbers have actually almost doubled, we are definitely in need of support and we have a wonderful back from this community and we are grateful for everybody's time and energy they put in."
