Luckily, the one sunny day this weekend falls on Earth Day, giving us even more incentive to get outside and enjoy what Nature has to offer.

Dawn Smith, Town of Okotoks Sustainability Coordinator says, the Town isn't doing anything big to celebrate...yet!

"It's very difficult to plan something in April, so in the Town, we do large events to celebrate our environment week at the beginning of June instead." Smith says "We are promoting the Earth Day Celebration though and Earth Day Canada's theme this year, is outdoor play.  We're really trying to push the concept of people reconnecting with nature."

An article on Earth Day Canada's website reads "A recent UNICEF study ranks Canada 24th out of 29 countries when it comes to children’s health and happiness; 20 percent of them are considered obese; and about 70% of Canadian youth get outside for less than an hour each day."

Smith says, this is why it's important to get youth outside and used to leaving their technology at home.

"We want them to get outside, disconnecting from technology, and experiencing nature in their local environment."

The sun should be shining all day, so get out there and take advantage of the warm weather.

Some outdoor ideas, are exploring the river valley, taking the dogs for a walk, heading to the park or even taking a drive out to the mountains to go for a hike or picnic.
