The weather can't be used as an excuse to avoid getting active for Winter Walk day on Wednesday.

The provincial initiative is a way to help promote getting active in the winter.

Residents are being encouraged to walk indoors at Pason Centennial Arena and keep track of the time they've walked to submit to shapeab.com. Each submission will go towards seeing which community in the province is the most active.

Mark Doherty, community events coordinator for the Town of Okotoks, says if people aren't able to make it to Pason they can still take part.

"It's just an awareness to say 'get out, get active' and you can register as an individual, a family, a company, a school, whatever you want," he says. "Typically we get really good participation from our schools. If the weather's not the greatest they'll walk in their gymnasium but they'll log their time and enter it. Hopefully we come out on top."

Doherty says Pason Centennial Arena is a great host site for the event in Okotoks.

"It's just a great facility, it's climatically controlled so whatever's happening outside isn't what's happening inside and it's free so take advantage of it."

Winter Walk Day takes place from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
