Motorists better fill up while they have the chance because prices are only going to get higher in the next couple of weeks.

The average price of fuel in Alberta is currently hovering around $0.91 litre while places like Costco are at least 5-6 cents lower than the average gas station.

Senior Petroleum Analyst at GasBuddy.com Dan McTeague says there's a few reasons why there's been quite a large gap in prices.

"Retailers for the past few weeks have been taking an absolute beating responding to big box stores that offer gasoline as a lost leader," he says. "In other words with no retail margin so retailers have had nothing to operate on."

McTeague says the prices are only going to get higher everywhere including the big box stores because the demand for gasoline is rising.

"We saw wholesale prices for gasoline increase by about 6-7 cents a litre. Given that would put most retailers below the cost that they need to be able to cover their own to buy the gasoline both the wholesale price had to be reflected at the pumps and as well some degree of retail margins."

While the prices will be steady for the weekend, McTeague says you'll see a real jump early next week hovering around the $1.00 a litre mark.

"Understand if you're anywhere in Okotoks and your gas stations are costing you $0.84 a litre, without the cost of transportation to buy the gas there's a period of time where you'll probably see 95.9, it might drop down to 91.9 and depending on what happens between now and say Wednesday of next week would could see prices rise to 99.9."
