A High River father is battling cancer and a good friend has stepped up to help him and his family.

Nick Kellock says he's gotten to know Matt Thompson over the last couple of years and their children play together regularly.

He's set up a GoFundMe page for his friend.

Thompson has already beaten stage 3 colon cancer but, during a check-up, he was found to have another issue.

"They were checking him out and then the doctors found three different spots on his lungs, they did a bunch of tests, they did a biopsy, and then they, unfortunately, saw that biopsy test positive for stage 4 cancer," Kellock says.

"Unfortunately it's in too many locations for him to safely get a surgery that he needs to clear it out so his only option right now is to undergo three to six months of very aggressive chemotherapy to try to shrink the spots on the lungs."

Because of these health issues, the fourth-year carpenter with ATCO Gas has had to go on disability.

Thompson has two children: Stanley (6), and Rose (3).

Kellock says besides the Go Fund Me page there are plans for a big fundraiser at the High River Brewery on Dec. 17 featuring a silent auction and entertainment.
