The Okotoks Food Bank is part of a provincial initiative that's seeking to bring in health conscious donations.

The #givehealthy campaign through Food Banks Alberta allows donors to purchase healthy food online which will then be delivered to the food bank over the summer to keep them stocked with fresh food.

Sheila Hughes, Executive Director of the Okotoks Food Bank, says it opens a new world for donations.

"It's very innovative, it's not your traditional food drive. It's a great way for us to be provided with healthy food donations that you wouldn't typically drop off in the food donation bin at a grocery store."

Hughes says if residents aren't able to take part in the online initiative they can still make healthy donations.

"The type of food donations that would be considered healthy but non-perishable would be whole grain rice, whole grain pasta, things with low salt and low sugar, so any of the lunch and snack type items for children would have no additional sugar added, also peanut butter and canned fish."

Monetary donations are always appreciated as they allow the food bank to go out and purchase fresh foods that are required for their clients food hampers each week.
