The Alberta provincial government has confirmed the first presumptive case of COVID-19, also known as the novel coronavirus, in the province.

During a press conference on Thursday evening, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said a woman in her 50's may have contracted the illness while on a Grand Princess cruise ship in California.

She returned to Alberta on February 21st, and began a self isolation on February 28th.

The woman is a resident of the Calgary Zone, which includes Okotoks, and is currently recovering at home.

Hinshaw says other Albertans were aboard the ship, and she encourages those individuals to stay home for a 48 hour period, even if they feel healthy.

She says measures to contain the virus are already underway.
