A below average week of calls for the Okotoks Fire Department in this week's edition of the Fire Report.

Fire Services dealt with 15 calls during the last seven days.

Okotoks fire Chief Ken Thevenot says they were fortunate to not deal with any fire calls.

"We had five alarm system activations, we had eight medical responses we attended, one motor vehicle accident and one incident where nothing was found," he says.

Following the events that took place in Airdrie on Sunday where a ten and six year old boy fell through the ice into a canal, Thevenot is making sure something like that doesn't happen in the community with storm ponds or the Sheep River.

"Storm retention ponds with the chinook weather, the overflow and run-off can create conditions under the ice that you can't see from the surface."

Thevenot says it's a difficult situation to deal with first responder who have to conduct an ice rescue.

"Unfortunately it takes something like that to happen before we recognize how dangerous these storm ponds and river systems can be."

The six year old boy from Airdrie died on Sunday while the ten year old was in hospital being treated for hypothermia.
