Okotoks firefighters have been in the community recently to make sure businesses are up to date with their fire safety procedures.

The fire department is using the yearly check-up as a great opportunity to remind residents to ensure their homes are protected in case of a fire.

In fact, residents who would like to make sure their house is secure can phone the fire department to set up a free in-home inspection.

"We're always thinking about that information and interaction with the public," said Firefighter Ryan Kaiser. "We'll come in as a crew, go through the house, and we've got a checklist of different things we're looking at."

The firefighters will check to make sure your fire alarms and CO alarms are functioning properly, as well as look at potential threats like the furnace room.

For businesses, with recent allegations against a local fire prevention company, it's a reminder to make sure you're working with qualified technicians.

"We recommend if you are getting any work done the company and technician is certified," Kaiser said.

Residents who are interested in booking an in-house inspection can call the fire department.
