For the first time in over a month, residents in the M.D. Foothills can burn again.

The M.D. lifted its fire ban after having it in place since March 11.

M.D. of Foothills Fire Chief Jim Smith says conditions are not ideal but strong enough to have the ban lifted for now.

"We've got about a tenth of moisture in the ground at the moment on the grass so it's not very much but it's enough to get the ban off temporarily," he says. "We'll see how the wind does, the sun, the heat and where we're going to be at next week."

Burning barrels and other fires can be lit again as well.

Smith says burn permits were also given the green light.

"They can get a burn permit from a fire guardian or on the M.D. of Foothills website or our fire station in Heritage Pointe, and the burn permits are free."

Despite the ban being lifted, Smith says residents should still take proper precautions when burning.

"Make sure when you do light a fire it's in a low wind condition, look after the fire while it's burning. Make sure all fires are out by 10 p.m. and that in order to get a fire permit you need to phone that permit number into dispatch before light and also watch out because there's still a lot of dry grass and brush out there."

To get your burn permit visit the M.D.'s website.
