It's hard not to talk about the Alberta economy without mentioning oil prices, and with the recent photo showing that a bucket of chicken costs more than a barrel oil it's hard to find a positive.

But for motorists at least for the next little while the price at the pumps can make life easier on the wallet.

Senior Petroleum Analyst with GasBuddy.com Dan McTeague says everyone should benefits from low gas and diesel prices for the next little while.

"Prices are about $.63-$.64 a litre for a gas station to buy fuel," he says. "We haven't seen those kind of prices, you'd have go back to at least December of 2008, more likely November of 2003. But be as it may those prices at least are going to be around for the better part of the middle this week."

McTeague says that trend could continue long after last week too.

"A real bonus for all of us right now," he says. "As we're seeing prices trend to levels we haven't seen in a long time and that's probably and to likely continue at least till the mid part of February."

The only way the prices could go up rapidly all comes down to how strong the dollar is against the American greenback.

"Just keep watching the Canadian dollar, if it strengthens it means that we're good, if it weakens it could threaten those low prices. What ever happens in the US matters especially in Chicago so for now we're in a sweet spot and let's just hope it keeps going, my sense is it will be for the next couple of weeks anyway."
