The cosmetology lab at Foothills Composite High School received a complete makeover and is open for business.

The goal with the lab's modernization was to have it set up like a salon to be more efficient and complimentary to the school's apprenticeship program.

Kendra Wegener, CTS hairstyling instructor, says students were held back with some of the more hands-on lessons while waiting for the renovations to be complete.

"They were stuck doing a lot of theory, we just had to move around our program and it was quite a venture doing everything upstairs in a classroom but they all knew it would be very well worth it once they came down here. They've all told us they're so happy so it was worth the wait."

FCHS is one of the few high schools left in the province that runs a full apprenticeship program where students can complete a college program in a high school setting so students can start to become a registered apprentice during their time in school.

Wegener says the set up of the new classroom is designed to be better for both the students and clients.

"Our old sinks were put in 30 years ago, they were probably about six inches too short so that was a huge problem for clients and students as far as bending over and sore necks and backs. All of the ergonomics are much better now. Everything's been tested out and the students are very happy about everything."

Aside from new sinks, the lab also features all new stations, a bathroom, and a reception and retail area.

The program is back accepting clients for hair services Mon.- Thurs. with appointments at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
