The Town of Okotoks is adding another section of recyclables to the Eco Centre.

Clothing is now being accepted, and it will go to a prodigious purpose.

Waste Services Manager Paul Lyons says adding textiles to the Town's recycling plan is just another way to eliminate unnecessary items being hauled off to the landfill.

"Our aim is to continue to find not just new products but materials that are ending up in the landfill," he says. "Our aim is to reduce that as much as possible."

The Town has joined forces with 'Clothing For A Cause' which takes all kinds of clothing along with shoes and other linens which are sold to international recyclers who sell them to micro-enterprises in developing nations.

Lyons says it's a great way to help others less fortunate especially in places like Haiti who have limited access to resources.

"They've been focused on education for a number of years and recently they have started to provide legal services to people who are in detention centres that need some legal advice."

Lyons says eliminating clothing from landfills is important because and fabric thrown out and hauled out takes up more space in disposal areas than other items.

"Quite often the material we're throwing out might just have a rip or maybe it's just too small and so re-using this material is way better than throwing it into a landfill."

The textile bin is located inside the Eco Centre during their business hours and all residents have to do is simply drop their fabric in the bin.
