The Town of Okotoks held Earth Day celebrations at the Epcor Environmental Education Centre on Monday.

The Earth Day event included a scavenger hunt for indigenous trees, environmental crafts, and a door prize.

Jinny Toffelmire, Environment and Sustainability Specialist for the Town, says the event is to help emphasize the importance of environmental issues.

"I think it was really exciting for the kids to go out and experience the tree scavenger hunt. It brought to life the different aspects of the trees in our river valley, and they got to see what's important about them, and the role they play in the environment of Okotoks," Toffelmire said.

The event gave Okotoks youth an opportunity to get up close and personal with nature. Toffelmire says she hopes they were able to see how important our ecosystem is to our way of life.

"I really hope that the kids get a sense of the wonderful place that we live, and how important every little aspect of it is."

The Environment and Sustainability department's next project is Environment Week, which will run the first week of June.
