The town of Okotoks will soon have a microbrewery in the downtown area, after approval from town council for a zoning land use bylaw amendment Tuesday evening.

Lisa Watts, Owner of Hubtown Brewing Company, says approval of the amendment means she and her husband, Mark can move ahead with their plans to start a local downtown microbrewery.

"For us, the critical portion was the downtown because we've partnered with Boot Hill Gallery, and we're going to be putting our brewery in the main level of their building downtown," she said.

Watts says they will spend the next few months getting through the permitting process, with hopes of starting construction in January after they take possession.

She also says the business began with an interest in brewing beer at home, and after three years they're looking to go big.

"We went down the path of learning about craft beer and were slightly shocked at how different it is to what we thought beer was, and what we grew up with. So we started building these brew stations for people to start brewing the kind of beer that we were learning we loved so much," said Watts.

Watts says they anticipate an opening date in early spring of 2019, with aspirations of including a rooftop patio.
