The Town of Okotoks is warning residents of a door to door scam involving salespeople pretending to work for EnerGuide Canada in association with Town's Energy Rebate Program.

Complaints were reported to the Town, RCMP and Municipal Enforcement about the alleged sales people going to doors asking to check escaping heat from inside household vents and performing audits.

Municipal Enforcement Manager Tim Stobbs says the Town confirmed with EnerGuide last week that no had been sent out to do energy assessments yet as they are scheduled to commence in May.

"At this time the Town of Okotoks can state that they do not have anybody going door to door in regards to the MyHeat program or regards to any kind of efficiencies and we'd like everybody to be cautious," he says.

Stobbs says that people need to pay close attention to possible frauds and don't allow them to step into your home.

"Anytime somebody comes to your door from an authorized government agency or if they're representing a reputable company they'll have proper identification, they'll be able to explain explicitly what they're program is about and should you feel uncomfortable in anyway or you feel this is fraudulent do not let the person in your house, do not engage them and by all means call RCMP or Municipal Enforcement."

Stobbs also says there's a couple other ways to find out if someone at your door is legit or a fraud.

"If they're actually trying to sell you some goods they should have some form of identification identifying that they have a proper Town of Okotoks business licence to sell within the Town and a provincial sales license if they're doing it provincially so I'd be very cautious unless the people have all the documentation."
