Halloween can be a scary time time of year not just for kids but for dentists as well.

The basics when it comes to eating candy and avoiding cavities include brushing and flossing teeth soon afterward.

Dr. Mostafa Altalibi at Okotoks Orthodontics says those with specific orthodontic work should choose the candy they're eating wisely as it could affect their dental work.

"The chewy, sticky candies are probably the worst because they really get around all the braces or the appliances and then when you go to remove them the pressure you use can dislodge the braces and appliances."

He says if you're out eating candy and don't have time to brush your teeth after there's an easy way to help lessen your chance of cavities.

"A cool little trick is to have some nuts handy with you or some of the firm cheese. Both of those change the ph of your mouth to make it more basic and therefore it makes you less susceptible to getting cavities so if you have a few nuts in your pocket throw some in after your candies and it should help quite a bit."

Those with Invisalign are ok to brush and floss like normal after eating candy.
