Dewdney Players Group Theatre will head to Calgary's Community Theatre Awards later this summer with an impressive amount of nominations under its belt.

The event, mirroring the Tony's for the local community, recognize awards ranging anywhere from best play or musical to outstanding lighting design.

Dewdney Players president Ed Sands says all three of their productions this year could potentially bring home an award.

"I believe Dewdney got 17 nominations this year and of the three plays we had this year: Calendar Girls, Cinderella The Pantomime, and The 39 Steps, all three were recognized in various aspects, and all three plays were nominated for best play or Cinderella for best musical, so we are very proud of that."

Anyone that watches a Dewdney Players performance can actually help nominate the local theatre group for future awards by logging into the Calgary ACTS website and nominating one of the plays.

Sands says he is extremely proud of the group's accomplishments this year.

"I have great pride for myself and I feel like the teacher, the parent, because the children have done so well and they have achieved so much. It gives me the sense that we have found good producers and they've selected good casts, directors and crews. And I always say this, what I find exceptional about the Foothills area is the massive talent out here and I think this helps to confirm that for me one more time."

Dewdney Players were nominated 17 out of the 108 nominations, in 23 categories, proving that the Foothills does have talent.
