Tear down has started on a piece of Okotoks history.

Hazardous materials have started to be removed from the interior of the Old Creamery Building on Riverside Drive, with the exterior demolition expected to be completed by Oct. 23.

The demolotion of the building that's over 100 years old is the result of a fire that took place in May.

A structural assessment was performed on the remains which showed extensive damage to the roof's truss system and floor joists, showing the site is a safety hazard and uninhabitable.

The Town has said if it's possible they'll try to salvage some of the buildings original century old wooden beams.

In time, the Town will look to the public for ideas to determine how the site should be used in the future.
