The 40th Annual Sheep River Road Race was a huge success yesterday, despite the below average seasonal temperatures.

79-year old, Richard Ellum, has been present at every Sheep River Road Race since its start in 1979.

"This is my 40th Sheep River Road Race. 1979 when it started, I had just had my 40th birthday. I'd been active and always been running, so I decided I would enter then race to see how i did," he said.

Ellum was the first adult to cross the finish line in the first race in 1979, but says he was outrun by some younger participants.

"I think I'm a fairly good example of running being a life time activity," he said.

Due to a muscle injury, Ellum did not participate in this year's run, however, was presented with an honorary patch by Dave Proctor, who ran the 5 kilometre run and handed out medals for the kid's 2 kilometre run.

Proctor says he's healing well after a back injury prevented him from completing his cross Canada run this past summer, and tries to participate as much as possible to stay consistent and in fit running condition.

Participants of the Sheep River Road Race contributed to Proctor's Outrun Rare Disease campaign that was recognized at this monumental event.
