Increased concern over the Sheep River's water levels have resulted in a mandatory outdoor water ban for Okotoks.

Effective immediately, residents and businesses are no longer permitted any outdoor water use, including any of the following:

  • Watering established lawns, trees or shrubs (Hand watering will still be permitted using a container or a hose with a manual trigger nozzle. This is only for flowerbeds, vegetable gardens or new trees and shrubs,).
  • Washing driveways, vehicles or houses
  • Filling hot tubs or swimming pools
  • Running sprinklers for any use (including recreational)
  • Bulk water supply at the Operations Centre is closed

Chris Radford, Operations and Infrastructure Director for the Town of Okotoks says the weather has compounded an already ongoing issue.

"The sustained heat wave southern Alberta has experienced over the past few weeks, compounded by the lack of precipitation, has impacted the Sheep River water level, while demand has spiked." He adds "The outdoor watering schedule has not resulted in enough reduction in water use and demand is particularly high during the scheduled outdoor watering times."

The Town will be reducing their outdoor water usage as well, by eliminating irrigation except on recently sodded areas, where non-potable water is being used or where non-potable water systems exist like Riverside Park.

Radford said in a press release, that officials will be looking at the situation next week, but the ban will likely remain.

"Staff will be monitoring the situation and will re-evaluate the ban next week. With the forecast for the next seven days calling for continued hot, dry weather, it is likely it will remain in place until substantial rainfall occurs."

The Town recommends that instead of using a pool or sprinkler over the next few days to cool off, that residents take advantage of indoor facilities like the pool, or spray park, (which use recycled water) to keep cool.

Non compliance with the outdoor watering ban will result in enforcement and fines.
