Co-op grocery stores, like many others, throw out a lot of out-of-date food. Some of it while it's still edible and safe to eat.

The Senior Manager of Corporate Communications, Karen Allan says, they're all for getting perishables to the food bank and others that are in need but logistics seem to be a problem.

"We would love to hear from somebody that would be able to assist with the logistical issues," she says. "Obviously the best option is to share that food with the community."

Co-op already collects pre-packaged donated food that customers can purchase in their stores when they check out.

Allan says, "When it comes to products that we are pulling off our shelves because they are nearing the best before date, there is actually a logistical challenge that we face in trying to have an agency that can collect that vfood and then distribute it pretty much within the same day, within a 24 hour time period just so that we're in compliance with Alberta Health Services regulations. Because of that, at this time we are unable to distribute all of that fresh food on a daily basis to local community organizations."

"Ideally, if the pilot works well we're hoping to be able to expand it and then eventually offer it in all of the Calgary Co-op locations and all of our trading areas."

Allan says they have a history of donating food in High River with the "Stuff A Bus" and "Food For Thought" campaigns.

She maintains that Co-op is all ears if anyone within the community has creative ideas to get the food delivered.
