Alberta RCMP are joining in on recognizing National Safe Driving Week.

The timing is appropriate as Christmas party season is here and officers want to make sure motorists are planning ahead and not driving under the influence.

From Jan. 1- Oct. 31 this year, RCMP in Alberta laid 2,788 charges for impaired operation of a motor vehicle by alcohol and 124 charges for impaired operation by a drug.

Officers are reminding us that cannabis impairs differently than alcohol and that combining cannabis with even small amounts of alcohol greatly increases the negative impact on driving skills.

RCMP say a safe ride home should be planned before heading to a party.

Party hosts can do their part by offering taxi information, having guests stay over night, and taking guests keys.

Winter weather can also impact travel so it's recommended motorists make sure vehicles are cleared of snow and ice, leave extra space between them and others on the road, and give themselves extra travel time.
