This weekend marks the first stage of Christmas parties for all shapes and sizes and there will be that increased presence of law enforcement protecting Alberta roads.

The Okotoks RCMP is reminding everybody in and outside of Town that drinking and driving will be at a zero tolerance.

Sgt. Sukh Randhawa says get prepared for a number of Checkstops just about anywhere this weekend and beyond.

"If you are getting involved in drinking, drink responsibly don't drink and drive," he says. "RCMP will be holding a number a checkstops periodically from time to time."

A licence suspension can occur when anyone's blood alcohol concentration is at .05 which is the legal limit and can lead to charges or worse an accident that could have serious ramifications on one's future.

Randhawa says even if you get that safe ride home but are still in a position to drive home drunk in other parts of the next day there will be no exceptions this holiday season.

"There will be increased patrols in the area that's for sure in the night and the early mornings. Whether it's Christmas or even Christmas Eve the message is very clear from our side if you decide to get behind the wheel, think twice."

The RCMP hope this season everyone will take the time to find a safe ride home or call a taxi and make sure others don't encourage each other to put the key in the ignition after having consumed alcohol.
