The new federal government is making good on their campaign promise of changing the first past the post voting system that is currently in place in Canada.

The government is going about doing so without the input of the Canadian tax payer.

Foohills MP John Barlow says that this is something all Canadians should be apart of and have a say in at the end of the day.

"There is a real opportunity here having seen that a lot of people just don't vote and this gives them a reason to get engaged," Barlow said.

Barlow says that the last election had a decent turn out with over 65% of the population voting but that still is not enough, more people need to be engaged and have a voice.

"This is a very important discussion that Canadians need to have with their friends, their family and to the media and say we want to be heard on this."

Barlow along with other MP's from across the country have created e-petitions for Canadians to sign, but he says just signing the petition is not enough, talking about the problem will help get the word out there and solve it.

"This is not a decision that should be made by the Prime Minister or his government but a decision that should be made by all Canadians," Barlow said.

Barlow says that the only way for this decision to be made correctly is through a referendum.
