September is a busy month with students back in school, which is why Okotoks RCMP are reminding residents to be cautious in school zones.

Cst. Susan Ratchford says posted school zones are 30 km/h and recommends if people are in doubt over the times it's in effect, to go 30 km/h anyways as playgrounds are generally in use year round.

She says if motorists are caught going 10 km/h over the 30 kilometer school zone speed limit, they could face a fine of $105 plus demerits.

When it comes to using crosswalks, Ratchford says parents can play an important role in making sure their children know how to use them properly.

"Parents need to do their due diligence in educating their kids to look both ways and have them make eye contact with the driver as well, and if the driver doesn't make eye contact then it's a good idea to stay put on the sidewalk until the car passes," she says.

According to Ratchford, if pedestrians are caught improperly using a crosswalk or jaywalking they could face a $78 fine.

An increase has been made in the amount fined for people who don't obey school buses.

"It's now a $543 fine plus demerits for failing to stop for the school bus when the flashing red lamps are activated."

Ratchford says people are trying to get their routines nailed down, so morning commutes could be a little hectic and says it's important residents remain cautious and take their time.
