The Town of Black Diamond could see more backyard hens soon as the Town has agreed to approve the recent backyard hen project.

Mayor Sharlene Brown says there was plenty of support for the project and more importantly no complaints by the rest of the community.

"We have three residents that have backyard hens and they successfully went through the pilot project." she says. "There was virtually no complaints that came forward through community residents, there were no complaints that came forward to bylaw so we're moving ahead with that project."

Brown adds in a few weeks just about anyone eligible to have backyard hens can have them.

"Soon as the animal control bylaw has been re-written, anybody in the community can apply for the backyard hen program."

Brown says there are some limitations to the backyard hen initiative once given the green light.

"You can't have any more than four and you can't have a rooster," she says. "All you can have is hens and there is certain stipulations around where you put your coop in your backyard so there's some setbacks around fences and neighbours and pieces that are also incorporated into that."
