The carbon tax isn't getting a lot of love in Alberta.

Foothills Member of Parliament John Barlow is also against the idea of the tax.

He says the argument being used by some that the tax would help get pipelines approved is wrong, and says all you need to do is look at B.C. which, he says, has one of the most successful carbon tax regimes in the country.

"Right now they have the Trans Mountain pipeline, Northern Gateway, Pacific LNG, three huge projects, not only for B.C. but for all of Canada, and they future of our resource sector," he says. "Having a carbon tax in B.C. has not helped these projects get any further ahead."

He says the mayor of Vancouver has been lobbying against the Trans Mountain pipeline, which is on a right of way that's existed for more than 50 years and Barlow calls a "no brainer" yet despite the carbon tax it's not helping in the approval process.

Barlow says he hasn't seen any evidence that having the carbon tax will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and calls it a simple cash grab that will hurt Albertans.

The idea of a carbon tax came up at the federal Conservative's recent convention because, as Barlow says, as a national party, they need to discuss the implications of climate change on society.
